Pelargonium graveolens
Rose Pelargonium, often called rose geranium, is a fragrant, multitasking wonder that brings old-world charm and big flavour to any garden. With its lush foliage and a scent that evokes fresh roses with a citrusy lift, this perennial herb is a favourite for essential oil distillation, dessert infusions, and gourmet flavoured sugars. It’s robust, drought-hardy, and endlessly generous with its fragrant leaves throughout the year.
Native to Southern Africa, Rose Pelargonium has long been cultivated for its essential oils and culinary uses. Its rose-scented leaves are especially prized in the perfumery and food industries, with many small growers distilling it at home or using the foliage to add flair to teas, cakes, and preserves. With South Africa being one of the major global producers of rose geranium oil, the plant has deep regional roots and rich potential for gardeners and makers alike.
The leaves are edible and best used for their aroma rather than texture. Simply bruise fresh leaves to release their oils and infuse syrups, jams, jellies, creams or vinegars. Layering them with sugar creates a delicately perfumed rose geranium sugar, ideal for sprinkling on cakes or stirring into tea. They also pair beautifully with berries, lemon, and dairy in baked goods and ice cream bases. Infusions can be used in cocktails or as floral glazes for desserts. For distillation, the leaves and stems are steam-distilled to yield a small but potent amount of essential oil high in citronellol and geraniol.
Supplied as a rooted propagule, this is the most reliable and efficient method of establishing new plants. No priming or soaking is required. Simply transplant into well-drained soil and keep moist until established. Rooting occurs best at 18 to 22°C, and plants take quickly under warm, mild conditions.
Grow in full sun to partial shade in loose, compost-enriched soil. Space plants 30 to 45 cm apart. Once established, they tolerate drought and neglect well, but respond beautifully to light feeding and regular tip-pruning. Harvest leaves in the morning for the best oil and flavour content. In cold zones, grow in pots and protect from frost.
Rose Pelargonium has no major pest or disease issues and is widely regarded as hardy and low-maintenance.
Supplied as a single propagule.
