Withania somnifera
Native to Africa and Asia, Ashwagandha is known for its adaptogenic properties, helping the body cope with stress and anxiety, certainly something that many people have trouble with today. Used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, the rest of the world is just catching on to the numerous benefits of this amazing plant.
Ashwagandha is easy to grow, but requires a full season to produce thick, succulent roots. Sow in seedling trays indoors to get a jump on the season, planting out when all danger of frost has passed. A germination heating pad greatly assists with germination as they need temperatures of 25 deg C to get germinating.
On transplant, space 30 cm apart in rows 60cm apart. Grows to a height of 60-120cm and can get quite bushy through a warm growing season. Requires full sun and a well draining soil. All parts of the plant are edible with medicinal qualities and leaves and berries can be harvested throughout the growing season. However, the roots are the most sought after and should be harvested as the plant begins to die back after the first frosts to ensure maximum goodness in the roots.
Very sensitive to frost; grown as a tender annual in colder regions or as a perennial In frost free regions.
