this "wild cucumber" or Jelly Melon was given to me by a Zimbabwe local, the taste is very good and it grows in the bush, wild cucumber plants everywhere, this is i the Ngezi area, witch is about 130 km south west from Harare. baboons in the area love it. |

I never knew these were called Jelly Melons! how funny! I just call them wild cucumbers. They taste amazing! I usually don't wait for them to turn yellow because by that time the pips are tough. If you pick them before they get too big, they are the most delicious of all cucumbers. They have a slight lemon flavour and make a delicious salad, just peel, slice and season with salt, some tangy mayo if you like, a dash of pepper. They are VERY prolific producers and they don't like being babied. If you just let them go wild, they will give you so much fruit you won't know what to do with it. Mine produced so many, I ended up supplying restaurants! They are less fussy than regular cukes and also keep much better. It is an incredibly rewarding plant and one I would definitely recommend to everyone. |
