Allium cepa var. proliferum
Top Set Pickler is a flavour-packed perennial onion that delivers masses of crisp, tangy, cocktail-sized top sets season after season. Known for its exceptional productivity, this variety is perfect for gardeners who want reliable cocktail pickling onions with minimal effort. It produces abundant topsets above ground and clusters of small bulbs at ground level, offering two harvests in one.
Commonly referred to as a top-setting or walking onion, the Top Set Pickler behaves similarly to an Egyptian walking onion, forming superb uniform bulbils at the tip of tall stalks late in the season. These can be harvested young for sharp, crunchy pickles or left to mature and multiply. The underground bulbs also divide readily, forming tight clumps that can be split and replanted or used fresh in cooking.
Plant sets about 2-3 cm deep with 15 cm spacing. Ideal soil temperature is 10-20°C, with no priming or soaking required. Top Sets are best planted in late spring/summer. If left undisturbed, the clumps naturalise and self-propagate annually.
Grow in full sun with well-drained soil and generous organic matter. Space rows 25-30 cm apart. Top Set Pickler is incredibly hardy and thrives in poor soil, drought, and neglected corners of the garden. Bulbs can be harvested in 90-110 days, with top sets maturing in summer. Divide clumps every 2-3 years to maintain vigour.
