Allium cepa var. aggregatum

Oom Gideon Shallots are a rustic South African heirloom, grown and shared informally for decades. Named after their originator, “Oom Gideon” of Tweebuffelsmeteenskootmorsdoodgeskietfontein, they have developed something of a cult following among local growers. While not formally catalogued, these shallots are prized for their reliability and generous yields under South African conditions.
Previously, these have not been made available in great quantity and have only been offered in very limited numbers. This year, we are releasing these to the general public so that everyone can have the chance to grow and eat these fantastic shallots.

Often described as better than onions, Oom Gideon Shallots produce clusters of richly flavoured bulbs with a balanced sweet yet pungent profile. They are a favourite in slow cooked stews, braais and pickles, and their mellow character shines when roasted whole. Their firm texture also makes them a pleasure to slice and dice for everyday kitchen use.

Plant shallot sets with the pointy end up, about 2 cm deep and 10-15 cm apart. No soaking or priming is required, though bulb quality depends on good drainage and steady moisture.

Space rows 20-30 cm apart and ensure full sun. These shallots do not like wet feet, so loose friable soil with organic compost is essential. As a multiplier type, each planted bulb typically yields 5-10 daughter bulbs. Harvest in autumn, and cure in a dry, shaded area for best storage performance.
