Ipomoea batatas
Purple Purple is a visually stunning sweet potato variety known for its intense purple flesh and excellent adaptability in South African gardens. Grown for both its nutritional value and striking appearance, it’s a superb option for growers looking to offer something unique and eye-catching.
The roots have smooth, reddish-purple skin and rich purple flesh throughout. The flavour is slightly earthy with a mild sweetness, making them perfect for both sweet and savoury dishes. They’re excellent roasted, mashed, or even baked into breads and pastries, with the added benefit of high anthocyanin content natural antioxidants responsible for the deep colour.
Plant runners 5–10 cm deep in warm, loose soil once all danger of frost has passed. Soil temperatures should be between 20–30°C for best results. Slips don’t require soaking, but watering well at planting helps ensure strong rooting.
Purple Purple prefers full sun and well-drained soil with good organic content. Space runners 25–30 cm apart in rows 90–100 cm apart. Maturity is typically 100–120 days after planting, depending on climate and growing conditions. Consistent moisture in the early growth stage is ideal; reduce watering later to focus energy on tuber formation.
While specific resistance data is limited, Purple Purple has shown strong field performance under South African conditions. Healthy soil practices and crop rotation are recommended to reduce disease pressure.
