Strawberry Popcorn is a petite heirloom flint corn best known for its deep ruby-red ears that resemble large strawberries. With stalks reaching just 1.2 to 1.5 m tall, this compact variety was bred for both visual charm and kitchen performance. Each plant produces 2 to 4 ears, each 5 to 8 cm long, tightly packed with jewel-toned kernels that shine when fully dried. Though often used in seasonal displays, its origins lie in traditional American popcorn genetics.

When dried and popped, Strawberry Popcorn yields crisp, white kernels with a satisfying texture and mild, nutty flavour. Its small size means it’s less suited to fresh consumption, but it excels in home kitchens as a novelty snack or conversation-starting gift. The dried ears are also a favourite for wreaths, garlands, and centrepieces.

Sow directly into warm soil once daytime temperatures hold steady above 16 °C. Plant seeds 2.5 to 3.5 cm deep, spacing 30 cm apart in rows 60 to 90 cm apart. For proper pollination, plant in blocks of at least four rows. Cobs reach maturity in approximately 100 days, drying down on the stalk with kernels becoming hard and glossy when fully ripe.

Livingseeds recommends a minimum of 40 plants. For seed saving and to maintain stable traits such as plant height and cob shape, 80–100 plants are advised to prevent genetic suppression.
