Thymus serpyllum
Creeping thyme is a beautifully aromatic groundcover herb with a long tradition in both ornamental and culinary gardens. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, this low growing perennial is highly adaptable and ideal for planting between stepping stones, rockeries or as a lawn alternative. It spreads slowly to form a fragrant mat of tiny green leaves, topped with dainty pink to purple blooms that attract bees and butterflies in abundance.
The leaves have a savoury, mildly minty taste with subtle floral notes, making them useful in a variety of kitchen dishes. Use fresh or dried to flavour meats, vegetables, breads, oils, and teas. While creeping thyme is not as intense as common garden thyme, its soft flavour is ideal for lighter fare and its essential oils still carry antimicrobial properties.
Sow seeds directly onto the surface of moist, well drained soil in spring or autumn. Do not cover the seeds, as they require light to germinate. Press gently into the soil and keep moist until germination, which typically occurs in 14 to 21 days. Best grown as seedlings before transplanting, especially in cool or compacted soils.
This herb thrives in full sun and poor to average soil with excellent drainage. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and can handle light foot traffic. Plants begin flowering and become harvest ready at around 100 days. Prune lightly after flowering to encourage dense growth and maintain a tidy form.
