Ocimum gratissimum

Nunum basil, also known as African basil or clove basil, is a bold, aromatic variety native to West Africa and widely grown across tropical regions for both its culinary and medicinal qualities. With deep cultural roots, especially in Ghanaian cuisine, Nunum has been passed down through generations and valued for its generous leaf size and strong herbal aroma. This heirloom basil stands tall with bushy growth and broad green leaves that release a distinctive clove and oregano scent when crushed.

The flavour is robust and peppery, making it an excellent choice for soups, stews, infused oils, and especially fresh pestos. Its large leaves make harvesting easy, and their strong aromatic oils give depth to dishes and vinegars. In traditional African homes, Nunum is also used in teas and herbal remedies, with oils known to support respiratory health and digestion. The plant’s natural oils have insect-repelling properties, often used to ward off mosquitoes and other garden pests.

Sow seeds in late spring at a depth of about 5 to 6 mm. Maintain warm soil conditions between 21 and 29°C. Germination usually occurs within 6 to 10 days. Seeds benefit from light, so avoid planting too deeply and ensure consistent warmth and moisture during the early stages.

Once established, transplant seedlings into full sun after the last frost. Nunum basil thrives in rich, well-drained soil with ample space, ideally 35 cm between plants. Begin harvesting from around 60 days after sowing. Remove flower buds as they form to encourage continued leaf production and preserve flavour throughout the season.
