The Amy Sweet Hungarian Wax Pepper is a charming heirloom variety recognised for its reliability and exceptional sweetness. Originally derived from traditional Hungarian wax types, this sweet variant has been carefully selected for flavour and productivity. Its pointed, tapered fruits begin as a creamy pale yellow and mature to a soft light red, offering a beautiful colour transition that hints at their ripening stage. Compact yet prolific, Amy Sweet is a favourite among gardeners with limited planting space or container gardens.
In the kitchen, this pepper is incredibly versatile. Its thin walls and sweet, juicy flesh make it ideal for fresh eating, stuffing or roasting. It’s also well-suited to pickling or grilling, where its mild sweetness intensifies. With no heat at all, Amy Sweet is perfect for those who enjoy the flavour of wax peppers without the burn.
For best results, sow seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before your last frost. Maintain a soil temperature of 26 to 30 °C to ensure prompt germination, typically within 7 to 14 days. Seeds should be sown 5 to 10 mm deep in a Germination Mix. Once seedlings have at least two true leaves and night temperatures consistently remain above 13 °C, they can be transplanted outdoors in a sunny, sheltered position.
This variety thrives in full sun and benefits from rich, compost-enriched soil. Plants are compact yet sturdy and respond well to regular feeding. Space them 40 to 50cm apart to allow for good airflow and easy harvesting. Expect to begin harvesting around 70 to 80 days from transplant, when fruits are fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch. Regular picking encourages more fruit set, extending your harvest season.
