Capsicum chinense

The Apocalypse Chocolate is a rare and blisteringly hot chilli from Italy, developed as a hybrid of the 7 Pot and Trinidad Scorpion lines. Believed to have originated around 2015, this open-pollinated cultivar quickly gained notoriety for its intense heat and heavily wrinkled chocolate-brown fruit. The pods often display a distinctive scorpion-like tail, a nod to its fiery heritage.

Beneath the heat lies a surprising depth of flavour. Apocalypse Chocolate delivers a rich combination of fruity, floral and smoky notes with a slightly earthy edge. It is highly prized for ultra-hot sauces, spice blends, oils and pickling, where even a sliver of the pod adds explosive heat. Because it can exceed 2 million SHU, protective gloves and caution are essential during preparation.

Seeds should be started indoors at least eight weeks before the last frost. Use a seedling mix with good drainage and maintain a soil temperature between 28 and 32 °C for best results. Germination is slow and can take 14 to 30 days. Plant seeds about 0.5 to 1 cm deep and keep them moist with bottom heat and strong light during emergence.

Once established, plants reach 90 to 120 cm and produce generous yields in warm, sunny conditions. They thrive in rich soil with regular deep watering and benefit from staking due to the heavy fruit set. Fruits typically ripen 100 to 120 days after transplant, turning a dark, glossy chocolate-brown when fully mature. The unique flavour and extreme intensity of Apocalypse Chocolate make it a standout for serious chilli growers and heat lovers.
