Solanum tuberosum
The Avalanche potato is a UK-bred cultivar released in 1989 by J.E. Cockram. It is a cross between DHS 70 1034 9 and the famous Maris Piper, developed specifically for high yield and disease resistance. Popular among growers for its consistent performance, this medium-late variety is well suited to both fresh market and processing applications in South African conditions.
Avalanche produces large, round-oval tubers with yellow skin and light yellow flesh. It is ideal for boiling, baking and roasting, and holds its shape well, making it a great option for potato salads and oven dishes. With a starch content around 17 %, it delivers a creamy texture while retaining enough firmness to avoid disintegration.
Livingseeds supplies plant-ready tubers that do not require chitting. Plant directly into well-prepared soil once temperatures reach at least 10 °C. Set tubers 10 to 15 cm deep, spaced 30 cm apart, with rows 75 cm wide. Expect maturity in roughly 110 to 130 days depending on your local growing conditions.
This variety stands out for its strong disease resistance profile. It shows excellent tolerance to Late Blight, Potato Virus Y, Leaf Roll Virus, nematodes and Blackleg, along with moderate resistance to Common Scab. It stores well and has a stable appearance with shallow eyes, making it a dependable option for both short- and long-term kitchen use.
