Phaseolus vulgaris

Baby Sun bush bean is a compact French-style variety originating from a refined line selected for home gardeners and smaller growing spaces. Widely appreciated in Australia and South Africa, this early-maturing bush bean reaches just 30–40 cm in height while delivering generous yields of round, mid-green pods that are completely stringless. Its tidy habit and prolific nature make it ideal for intensive planting, and it remains a favourite for continuous picking throughout the season.

The beans are best harvested young, when they are crisp and tender with a nutty flavour and satisfying crunch. Their straight, slender 11–12 cm pods are perfect for steaming, sautéing, or eating raw straight from the garden. Baby Sun is a dependable performer that adds freshness to salads, stir-fries and vegetable platters.

Sow Baby Sun seeds directly into warm, well-drained soil, about 2–3 cm deep and spaced 10–15 cm apart. Optimal germination occurs between 18–25°C. Avoid sowing in cool or waterlogged conditions. Seed pre-soaking is optional but not necessary under warm soil conditions.

Plants thrive in full sun and should be watered evenly, especially during flowering and pod set. Expect the first harvests from 60–70 days after sowing. Daily or frequent picking encourages new pod development and extends the harvest period.
