• Blue Lake Pole Beans

Phaseolus vulgaris

The Blue Lake Pole Bean is a classic American variety with a reputation for reliability and flavour. Originally developed in the mid-20th century by Ferry-Morse in California, this variety gained prominence in the canning industry before becoming a favourite in home gardens. Its stringless, dark green pods grow on vigorous vines that can reach over 2 m in height, producing heavy yields over a long season.

These beans are especially popular for their crisp texture and sweet, full flavour. Best harvested when young and tender at 14–18 cm, they are excellent fresh, steamed or sautéed. Their canning roots mean they also preserve well by freezing or pickling. When left to mature fully, the pods can be dried and used as shelling beans.

Seeds germinate best when direct sown at a depth of 2–3 cm into warm soil above 16°C, ideally closer to 21–27°C. Germination typically occurs within 5–10 days. Soaking seeds overnight can enhance germination, especially in cooler conditions.

Provide strong support such as trellises or poles, spacing plants 10–15 cm apart, with rows 45–60 cm apart. Blue Lake thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, with regular watering. First harvests begin approximately 60–65 days after planting. Regular picking encourages continued pod production throughout the season.
