Nepeta cataria

Catnip, also known as catmint or catwort, is a hardy perennial herb native to Europe and Asia but now naturalised across much of the world. A member of the mint family, it grows in a loosely bushy form with square stems and soft, grey-green leaves. Its small, tubular flowers appear in pale lavender or white spikes from late spring through early autumn. Though often associated with felines, catnip has been used for centuries by herbalists as a gentle medicinal plant.

Best known for its remarkable effect on cats, catnip contains nepetalactone, a compound that triggers euphoria in roughly two-thirds of adult cats. The reaction is harmless and short-lived, making the dried leaves a favourite for homemade cat toys or treats. For humans, catnip has a mild calming effect and is often used as a tea to soothe digestion, ease cold symptoms, and encourage restful sleep. It can also be applied topically in compresses or salves to relieve minor muscle tension.

To germinate catnip, sow seeds just beneath the surface of a fine seedling mix in early spring or late summer. Lightly cover and keep moist. Seeds can take 10 to 20 days to germinate and benefit from a brief cold stratification period of 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator before sowing to improve success rates.

Catnip grows best in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It is tolerant of poor soils and dry conditions once established. Plants reach 60 to 90 cm in height and can spread easily if left to flower and self-seed. Regular trimming will encourage bushier growth and prevent unwanted reseeding. Cut fresh leaves for teas or drying just before the plant flowers, when oil content is highest.
