Cosmos bipinnatus
Available for purchase from 1 July 2025
Laced Cosmos refers to elegant cosmos varieties that feature delicate edging or contrasting outlines on their petals, creating a "laced" appearance reminiscent of fine embroidery. These striking annuals typically reach heights of 1.5m to 1.6m and flourish in open, sunny gardens. Their blooms present in purples, soft pinks, rose-reds, and occasionally bi-coloured patterns with defined margins.
The flowers are typical cosmos, with subtly scalloped or outlined petals surrounding a bright golden centre. They are perfect for cutting, offering a graceful aesthetic and long-lasting structure in bouquets. Gardeners often include them in mixed borders, cottage-style plantings, or as companion plants for pollinator-friendly gardens.
Sow seeds directly after frost in warm soil (18–22 °C), planting seeds 5mm deep with a spacing of 25cm between plants. Germination takes 7 to 21 days, depending on temperature. These cosmos thrive in well-drained soil with full sun and minimal feeding; overly rich soil can reduce bloom production. Regular deadheading of the blooms encourages continued flowering from midsummer until frost.
While most laced cosmos form upright, vase-shaped mounds and do not require staking, taller mixes or windy sites may benefit from light support. They are drought-tolerant once established and tend to self-seed freely.
