Echinacea purpurea
Echinacea, widely known as Purple Coneflower, is a striking medicinal perennial that brings both beauty and resilience to South African gardens. Native to the North American prairies and long used by Indigenous peoples for its healing qualities, this variety has found a comfortable home in our local soils. With upright stems topped by rose-pink, daisy-like petals and a distinctive bronze cone, Echinacea purpurea is as ornamental as it is functional.
Beyond its visual appeal, Echinacea is renowned for its herbal uses, particularly in immune support. The roots, flowers, and leaves have been used for generations in teas, tinctures, and salves. While clinical studies yield mixed conclusions, the plant remains a staple in natural remedies for colds, skin irritations, and general vitality.
Sow seeds in early autumn or spring directly into well-drained soil, covering them lightly—about 3 mm deep. Cold stratification improves germination, so you may also sow them in seed trays and refrigerate for two weeks before planting. Germination typically takes 10–21 days in temperatures between 15–24 °C.
Echinacea thrives in full sun and is highly adaptable to South African climates, tolerating drought, wind, and poor soils once established. Plants can grow up to 1.2 m tall and will flower from the second year onward. Allowing the cones to go to seed invites birds, particularly finches, while deadheading spent blooms will prolong flowering well into autumn.
