Phaseolus vulgaris

Favourite Pinto is a hardy bush bean selected for its reliability, high yields and classic flavour profile. With roots in traditional American dry bean production, it has found a firm footing in South African gardens as a dual-purpose variety that performs well in both green and dry stages. The seeds are tan with characteristic dark brown speckles and are valued for their creamy, earthy flavour once cooked.

These beans are versatile in the kitchen and ideal for winter storage. They can be harvested young for use as a snap bean, or left to mature and dry for later use in soups, stews, refried dishes and casseroles. The beans cook to a soft, even brown and hold their shape well, offering both visual appeal and excellent texture in meals.

Sow directly into warm, well-drained soil after the last frost. Plant seeds 2 to 3 cm deep, spaced 10 to 15 cm apart in rows about 40 cm wide. Germination typically occurs within 7 to 14 days when soil temperatures are between 18 and 24°C. Avoid soaking seeds before planting, particularly in cool or damp soils.

Favourite Pinto grows as a compact bush and is known for its strong tolerance to heat and moderate drought. These qualities make it well-suited to South African summer conditions. Beans mature in around 60 days for green use and up to 90 days for dry harvesting. Pods should be left to dry fully on the plant before shelling for storage.

For best performance, inoculate with SoyGro Beanflo before sowing. This microbial inoculant supports nitrogen fixation and improves plant vigour, especially in soils without a recent legume history.
