Zea mays

Glass Gem is a spectacular flint corn known for its iridescent, jewel-like kernels that span nearly every colour imaginable. Developed in the 1980s by Carl Barnes, a Cherokee farmer in Oklahoma, this variety was the result of decades of selective breeding using traditional Native American corn strains. It later came under the stewardship of Greg Schoen and was shared through Native Seeds/SEARCH. Its popularity soared when photos of its vibrant ears went viral, capturing the attention of growers worldwide.

Though most commonly grown as an ornamental corn, Glass Gem has practical uses too. Once dried, the kernels can be popped into white, crisp popcorn or ground into a richly coloured cornmeal. It is not suited for green mealie use, as the kernels are hard and glossy even before maturity. Each ear presents a unique pattern of blues, purples, pinks, oranges and greens, making it ideal for seasonal displays and heirloom preservation.

Sow seed directly into warm, well-prepared soil once temperatures remain above 18 °C. Plant 2–3 cm deep, spacing seeds 15–30 cm apart in rows 75 cm apart. Always sow in blocks of four or more rows to ensure full pollination. Plants reach up to 2.7 m in height and produce ears about 8–20 cm long. Ears reach full maturity between 110 and 120 days, when husks are dry and kernels are hard enough that they can’t be indented with a fingernail.

Livingseeds recommends a minimum of 40 plants. For seed saving and preservation of the wide colour variation and genetic integrity, 80–100 plants are strongly advised.
