Phaseolus vulgaris

Golden Wax Bean is a beloved heirloom bush variety first introduced in the late 19th century in the United States. Known for its striking golden-yellow pods and reliable performance, it has earned a place in both home gardens and commercial production. This short, compact plant typically reaches 40–50 cm in height and requires no support, making it ideal for smaller spaces and intensive planting.

The pods are smooth, stringless, and measure about 12–15 cm in length. They have a buttery, tender texture with a mild flavour that holds well when steamed, sautéed, or pickled. Golden Wax is a dual-purpose bean and can also be left to mature fully for use as a dry shelling bean, with small white seeds inside the pods.

Sow directly into warm, well-drained soil at a depth of 2–3 cm, once soil temperatures are consistently above 16°C. Germination typically occurs within 6–10 days. For best results, soak seeds overnight if planting early in the season to improve uniform sprouting.

Space plants 8–10 cm apart in rows 40–50 cm apart. Golden Wax prefers full sun and benefits from consistent moisture during flowering and pod set. Maturity is usually reached within 55–60 days. Regular harvesting of young pods encourages continued yields, and plants can produce well across a 3–4 week harvest window.
