Honeykey Gold is a compact bush bean that delivers both visual appeal and impressive garden performance. This South African favourite is known for its deep yellow pods and silky, tender texture. The variety stands out not just for its golden colour, but also for its sweet, buttery flavour and consistently high productivity in a small space. Honeykey Gold is a black-seeded variety, offering dual-purpose use as both a fresh and dry bean.

The pods are stringless and easy to prepare, making them a welcome addition to fresh summer meals or light steaming. Their tender snap and gentle sweetness are preserved well when blanched and frozen. Once matured and dried, the small black seeds provide excellent storage beans for use in a variety of warm dishes and salads.

Sow directly into well-prepared, warm soil after all frost danger has passed. Plant seeds 2 to 3 cm deep and space them 10 to 15 cm apart in rows spaced 40 cm apart. Germination takes 7 to 14 days in soil temperatures between 18 and 24°C. Avoid soaking seeds before planting, especially in cool or damp conditions.

This is a strong, compact plant suited to raised beds or containers. Although staking is not usually required, moderate feeding supports strong pod production. Pods are ready to pick from about 55 to 60 days, with dry beans maturing a few weeks later. Regular harvesting encourages prolonged pod set.

Treating seeds with SoyGro Beanflo prior to planting is recommended. This beneficial inoculant enhances nitrogen fixation and supports vigorous plant growth, especially in gardens where legumes have not been recently grown.
