The round-fruited Kiwano, known locally as Jelly Melon or African Horned Cucumber, is an indigenous gem of central and southern Africa. The ‘Rund’ variant offers a unique twist on the traditional spiny fruit, producing pale peach or ivory globes about 7 to 8 centimetres across. Each fruit matures into a brilliant orange hue and conceals a lime-green jelly interior that is as striking as it is refreshing. Revered in indigenous diets and wild food traditions, this lesser-known variety is gaining attention for its exotic appearance and flavour profile.

Kiwano Rund is often enjoyed fresh, with its mildly sweet, citrus-laced pulp scooped straight from the shell. The jelly-like flesh pairs well with a sprinkle of salt or sugar and shines in fruit salads, desserts and juices. Its taste, a mellow fusion of banana and lemon, adds a tropical touch to both sweet and savoury dishes. In parts of southern Africa, it also features in traditional beverages and serves as a natural thirst-quencher during hot summers.

Start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last expected frost. They germinate best at soil temperatures between 24 and 32 °C, and should be sown 12 mm deep in moist, well-drained medium. Germination takes 7 to 21 days. Once established, the seedlings can be hardened off and transplanted outside once night-time temperatures remain above 15 °C. Although it can be sown directly, the use of seedlings improves consistency and early growth, particularly when combined with bottom heat.

These vigorous annual vines prefer full sun and rich, composted soil. A sturdy trellis or fence is ideal, as vines grow up to 3 metres long and benefit from support to keep fruits off the ground. Mulching helps conserve moisture and prevent splash-back from the soil. Water regularly, especially during fruiting. Harvest when the skin turns deep orange and develops a slight softness to the touch, indicating peak ripeness and full seed maturity.
