Althaea officinalis
Marshmallow is a charming herbaceous perennial with deep roots in traditional healing and a gentle beauty that suits damp corners of South African gardens. Native to Europe and western Asia, this old-world plant has been used for centuries as both food and medicine. It grows upright to about 1.5 metres tall with velvety grey-green leaves and delicate pale pink flowers that bloom from midsummer into early autumn.
All parts of the plant are useful. The flowers and leaves can be added to salads or cooked into broths, while the thick white roots are especially rich in mucilage. When sliced and dried, the roots are soothing for coughs, sore throats, digestive discomfort and skin irritations. Marshmallow has also earned a place in history as the original base for the marshmallow sweet, long before sugar and gelatin took over.
Sow seeds in early spring or late autumn directly into moist, fertile soil. For best results, cold stratify the seeds by refrigerating them in damp sand or vermiculite for 3 to 6 weeks before sowing. Sow shallowly, around 3 mm deep. Germination occurs in 14 to 28 days at soil temperatures between 15 and 21 °C.
Marshmallow grows best in full sun or partial shade, and prefers loamy, moist soil with good drainage. It is well suited to areas near water features or swales. Plants return year after year, dying back in winter and re-emerging in spring. Space plants about 60 to 75 cm apart to allow airflow and room to flower. Flowers attract bees and butterflies, while the plant’s lush habit makes it a natural fit in cottage and medicinal gardens.
