Lemon Balm, also known simply as Melissa, is a gentle perennial herb that brings a calming presence and fresh citrus scent to any South African garden. Originally native to the Mediterranean, this bushy plant has long been cherished in kitchen gardens and monastery herb beds alike. Its heart-shaped, lemon-scented leaves and soft white flowers are not only attractive but have a long tradition of use in herbal medicine and aromatic cooking.

The bright flavour of Lemon Balm works beautifully in herbal teas, fruit salads, marinades, dressings and even jellies. It has long been used to ease stress, tension, indigestion, cold sores and mild insomnia. Its uplifting scent also makes it a popular ingredient in natural body care products and essential oil blends. Bees adore its flowers, making it a valuable plant for pollinator-friendly spaces.

Sow Lemon Balm seeds in spring or early summer, pressing them lightly into moist seedling mix with a light soil cover of about 3 mm. Germination takes 10 to 14 days at temperatures around 20 °C. Melissa prefers fertile, well-drained soil and grows well in both full sun and partial shade.

This herb can reach up to a metre tall and spreads into lush, leafy clumps. To keep plants neat and prevent self-seeding, trim back flower stalks before they set seed. Harvest leaves frequently to encourage new growth and divide clumps every few years to keep plants vigorous and compact.
