Verbascum thapsus
Mullein is a biennial plant with a long history in folk medicine, instantly recognisable by its large, woolly rosette in the first year and towering yellow flower spike in the second. Native to Europe and Asia but now naturalised across much of the world, this striking herb has adapted well to dry, poor soils and is a favourite for those looking to grow useful and ornamental plants. In its second year, the flower stalk can reach over 1.5 m tall, attracting bees and pollinators with its bright yellow blooms.
The leaves of mullein are soft and thick, once famously used as a natural toilet paper, but they are best known for their ability to soothe chesty coughs and respiratory complaints. Dried flowers are often steeped in oil to ease earaches, and herbal teas made from the leaves are still a staple remedy in many herbal traditions. This is a reliable and practical addition to any herb garden, especially for those seeking gentle, effective remedies from the garden.
Mullein seeds need light to germinate and should be sown very shallowly, pressed into the surface of well drained soil without covering. Sow in early spring or autumn, and expect germination within 14 to 21 days. Plants form a large rosette in the first season which must reach around 40 cm across to successfully overwinter and flower the following year.
Grow mullein in full sun with plenty of space. It is well suited to dry, sandy soils and requires very little care once established. The tall flower spike matures in its second year and can be harvested for both decorative and medicinal uses. After flowering, the plant dies back, having completed its biennial cycle.
