Zea mays
Natal 8 Row, also known as isiZulu, is a traditional South African landrace maize historically grown by the Zulu people of the Natal region. Often likened to Hickory King in appearance, this variety has been a staple in indigenous agriculture for generations. Its earliest known mention in scientific literature dates to 1935, where it was noted for both agricultural and industrial value. While each village historically maintained its own form of this corn, Livingseeds has worked toward stabilising traits such as cob length and row count while maintaining its landrace integrity.
This flint-type maize is widely used for pap, stock feed, and in traditional brewing of umqombothi. The kernels are hard and dense, producing a creamy, satisfying meal with exceptional milling quality. While often dried for later use, the ears can also be picked green for fresh eating or roasting.
Sow directly into well-prepared, warm soil once daytime temperatures exceed 15 °C. Plant 2–3 cm deep, spacing seeds 20–25 cm apart in rows 50–75 cm apart. For reliable pollination and full ear formation, plant in blocks of four or more rows. Harvest for dry use occurs at 90–100 days when husks are fully dried and kernels are firm. Green ears can be picked earlier depending on preference.
Livingseeds recommends growing at least 40 plants. For seed saving, and to retain the strong local genetics of this culturally significant landrace, 80–100 plants should be grown to maintain its genetic resilience and identity.
