Orangeglo is an outstanding heirloom watermelon that commands attention with its glowing orange flesh and classic oblong shape. First introduced in the 1960s by the Willhite Seed Company in Texas, it has since become a beloved choice for gardeners looking for something both eye-catching and exceptionally sweet. The rind is pale green with jagged dark green stripes, offering a beautiful contrast to its vibrant interior. Fruits typically weigh between 9 and 14 kilograms, with some exceeding 18 kilograms under ideal conditions.

The flavour of Orangeglo is widely celebrated for its intense sweetness and tropical undertones. Notes of mango and pineapple set it apart from typical red-fleshed watermelons. Its crisp texture and juicy bite make it a centrepiece for summer gatherings. Ideal for fresh eating, fruit salads, or chilled desserts, it delivers both visual impact and unforgettable taste.

Sow seeds 1.5 to 2.5 cm deep in warm, fertile soil after all danger of frost has passed. Maintain soil temperatures between 21 and 35°C for optimal germination. Seeds sprout within 5 to 10 days. Although direct sowing is common, starting seeds indoors and transplanting is the best way to get a jump on the season. You will also find that you germination rate is better on seed started indoors as opposed to direct sown. Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart in rows spaced 1.8 metres apart to give the vigorous vines room to spread.

Orangeglo thrives in full sun and requires regular, deep watering during fruit development. Harvest in about 85 to 90 days from sowing. Signs of ripeness include a dull rind, a buttery yellow patch on the underside, and a dry tendril near the stem. A hollow thump when tapped is another good indicator. Pick at peak ripeness for the richest flavour and juiciest texture.
