Capsicum chinense
Pockmark Orange is a striking and potent chilli bred in Australia from a cross between Bhut Jolokia and Pimenta de Neyde, developed by Jason Richards and named by Alice Lennard. This variety is known for its beautifully irregular pods that begin as deep purple or nearly black, then shift through dusky tones before finally maturing to a pitted orange with purple blushes. The name reflects the distinctive surface of the fruit. The strain available is the orange variant, producing some of the most eye-catching fruit in the chilli world.
The flavour is uniquely complex, offering a layered experience of fruity, peach and citrus notes with undertones of floral smokiness inherited from its Ghost pepper parentage. While its aroma and taste might suggest sweetness, the heat is very real, with estimates placing it between 1 000 000 and 2 000000 Scoville Heat Units. It is ideal for vibrant hot sauces, salsas and spicy chutneys.
For successful germination, start seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before your last expected frost. Maintain consistent soil temperatures between 26 and 30 °C for optimal sprouting. Soak seeds in a mild hydrogen peroxide solution or treat with Livingseeds OsmoPrimer for 6 to 8 hours prior to sowing to improve germination speed and uniformity. Sow seeds 5 to 8 mm deep in a fine, well-draining seedling mix under warm, humid conditions using bottom heat if available.
Pockmark Orange plants are vigorous growers with a compact yet productive form. They thrive in full sun and prefer rich, well-drained soil with regular watering. Fruit begins to ripen roughly 90 to 100 days after transplant, with pods continuing to change colour even after picking. This variety is as ornamental as it is flavourful, making it a standout in both garden beds and containers.
