• Roma Paste Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

The Roma Paste Tomato, despite its name evoking Italian roots, was bred and released in the United States in 1955. Originally developed for processing, it quickly became a favourite across gardens worldwide. This strain is an indeterminate selection of this classic variety, combining the iconic meaty texture of its San Marzano lineage with the extended harvest benefits of vining growth. Its dependable performance and concentrated tomato flavour make it an essential cultivar for home gardeners and small-scale producers.

With dense, low-moisture flesh and minimal seeds, Roma Paste Tomatoes are ideal for cooking. They shine in sauces, pastes, and chutneys, where wateriness would be a drawback. The fruits hold their shape well when sliced, making them a solid choice for salads and roasting too. Their flavour deepens with slow cooking, offering a sweet, rich tomato essence that suits a wide range of dishes.

Sow seeds in trays 5 mm deep in late winter or early spring, using a fine seedling mix and maintaining a temperature of 21–26°C for optimal germination. A heat mat is recommended to ensure even emergence, especially early in the season. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.

Once seedlings develop their first true leaves and reach a sturdy size, transplant them into larger pots or garden beds after the last frost. As indeterminate vines, Roma plants require support from trellising or cages to manage their upward growth and support the weight of the prolific fruit set. Fruit ripens approximately 75–85 days from transplant and should be harvested when deep red and fully firm for best quality and storage.
