Chamaemelum nobile

Roman Chamomile has long been cherished as both a medicinal herb and an ornamental ground cover, originating from the temperate meadows of Western Europe and North Africa. Often called English chamomile or garden chamomile, this perennial has been planted for centuries in herbal lawns and fragrant pathways, with its sweet, apple-scented blooms earning a place in both folklore and apothecary. In modern gardens, it offers a nostalgic connection to traditional English cottage gardens and historical “chamomile seats”.

Best known for its calming properties, Roman Chamomile is a staple for herbal tea lovers. The daisy-like flowers are used to brew soothing infusions reputed to relieve anxiety, digestive discomfort, and sleeplessness. It’s also valued in skincare and aromatherapy for its anti-inflammatory and calming effects, and fresh or dried flowers may be added to herbal blends, salves, or compresses.

To germinate Roman Chamomile, sow the tiny seeds on the surface of a fine, well-drained seedling mix as they require light to germinate. Do not cover with soil. A stable temperature of 18–20°C with gentle bottom heat will speed up germination, which typically takes 7–14 days. Autumn is the ideal time to start this cool-season herb.

Roman Chamomile thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers rich, slightly alkaline soil with good drainage. Once established, it spreads by creeping rhizomes and forms a soft, low mat that is ideal for planting between stepping stones or as a lawn alternative. Flowering begins in early spring and carries through to summer. Plants can be lightly mown or trimmed after flowering to encourage bushy growth and a second flush of blooms.
