Zea mays

Sahara Corn is a hardy yellow dent maize developed for Southern African conditions, offering dependable yields and strong disease resistance. This open-pollinated variety produces robust plants reaching up to 2.6 m in height with distinctive hanging leaves and cobs that develop white to reddish silks around day 70. Bred for both fresh and dry use, Sahara has become a trusted staple across commercial and home growers alike.

Its long, well-filled cobs measure up to 35 cm and carry 12–16 rows of plump yellow kernels. Sahara can be harvested green for roasting or boiling, or left to dry fully on the stalk for maize meal or animal feed. Its flavour and yield make it an ideal dual-purpose choice in any maize garden.

Sow seed directly into warm soil once temperatures exceed 15 °C. Plant 2–3 cm deep and space 25–30 cm apart in rows spaced 75 cm apart. Grow in blocks of four or more rows to ensure proper wind pollination. Green ears can be harvested from about 90–100 days, but full maturity for dry grain is reached at approximately 135 days, when husks are fully dry and kernels are firm and dented.

Livingseeds recommends a minimum of 40 plants. For seed saving, 80–100 plants are essential to preserve genetic integrity and avoid varietal decline.
