Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora ‘Siam Queen’
Siam Queen basil is a robust Thai basil variety selected for its intense flavour and strong growth, honoured as an All-America Selections winner in 1997. Originally bred for high performance in both garden and kitchen, it forms a dense, upright plant with large glossy green leaves and striking purple stems. Its tall, elegant flower spikes, topped with pinkish-purple blooms, attract bees and butterflies while adding visual flair to any garden or pot.
The flavour is deeply aromatic, with rich notes of anise and clove. Unlike sweet basil, it holds its flavour exceptionally well under high heat, making it a staple in Thai curries, stir-fries, noodle dishes, and infused teas. Its firm texture and flavour strength make it equally valuable raw or cooked.
Sow seeds in seedling trays about 5 to 6 mm deep and keep them warm and moist until germination, which occurs in 6 to 10 days at 21 to 29°C. Siam Queen basil prefers strong light and bottom heat to ensure uniform sprouting.
Once seedlings are well rooted and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them into full sun in nutrient-rich soil. Space plants about 25 cm apart. Regular harvesting will encourage bushier growth, and pinching off flower buds early can prolong the harvest. Plants typically reach maturity around 75 days after sowing.
