Satureja hortensis

Summer Savory Midget is a compact, fast-growing annual herb treasured for its glossy green leaves and soft white-blushed flowers. This midget variety stays tidy and upright, making it ideal for container gardens, small spaces or border planting. Known since ancient times, summer savory has been a staple in European and Canadian kitchens, and is especially valued in French cooking as a key part of the traditional Herbes de Provence blend.

The leaves deliver a warm, peppery flavour with notes of thyme and mint, perfect for seasoning green beans, meats, soups and stews. It shines as a garnish for savoury dishes or as a subtle herb in egg and cheese bakes. Whether stirred into salad dressings or sprinkled over grilled vegetables, this herb brings both aroma and depth. It has also been used traditionally to ease digestion and cramps, and its essential oils are known for their antioxidant and antimicrobial qualities.

Sow seeds on the surface of moist, well drained soil and press them in lightly. They require light to germinate, with seedlings appearing in 7 to 14 days. Start indoors in early spring or sow directly outdoors once the soil warms. Harvest begins around 90 days from sowing, when the plant reaches its flavour peak just before flowering.

Summer Savory Midget thrives in full sun and benefits from regular picking to encourage new growth. Its compact habit makes it a neat, productive herb that earns its place in every kitchen garden. Cut stems can be dried for long term storage, or used fresh to enjoy the herb’s bold yet balanced taste.
