Capsicum frutescens
The Tabasco Greenleaf chilli is a distinctive cultivar of the famous Tabasco pepper, renowned for its resistance to Tobacco Etch Virus, a trait developed through careful selection by the USDA. This variant is easily recognised by its lush, bright green foliage that remains unaffected even when infected, making it a preferred choice for both home gardeners and small-scale farmers. The original Tabasco pepper, from which Greenleaf descends, hails from the Mexican state of Tabasco and has been cultivated for centuries, achieving global fame through its use in the iconic McIlhenny Tabasco Sauce.
Tabasco Greenleaf chillies are prized for their juicy, thin-walled fruit that delivers a sharp, acidic heat with a tangy citrus undertone. Their medium heat level makes them a versatile kitchen staple, perfect for hot sauces, pickling, and infusing vinegars or oils. The fresh green pods are excellent when used young in salsas or chopped into salads, offering a zesty punch that brightens up any dish.
For successful germination, seeds should be soaked for 6–12 hours in either a 1% hydrogen peroxide solution or the Livingseeds OsmoPrimer to enhance germination rates, particularly with older seed. Sow seeds three times as deep as the seed’s length in a warm, humid environment, maintaining consistent moisture without overwatering. Bottom heat is essential, and germination is typically seen within 7–10 days at temperatures between 26–30°C.
Tabasco Greenleaf thrives in well-prepared, organically enriched soil with good drainage and full sun exposure. Start seedlings indoors in late winter or early spring and transplant only once the danger of frost has passed. Plants typically begin to bear fruit within 80–90 days from transplant, with a continuous harvest through summer into early autumn. Fruit ripens from light green to yellow, orange, and finally to a rich red, with harvestable pods at any stage depending on desired flavour and heat.
