• Tendergreen Bush Beans

Phaseolus vulgaris

Tendergreen Bush Bean is a dependable heirloom variety introduced in the early 20th century and valued for its consistent yields and adaptability. With a compact, self-supporting growth habit reaching around 45–50 cm tall, this variety is particularly well suited to small garden beds, containers, and staggered plantings.

The pods are smooth, round to slightly flattened, stringless, and measure approximately 13–15 cm in length. They are tender even when mature and offer a rich, classic bean flavour. Tendergreen beans are excellent fresh, steamed or stir-fried, and also hold their texture well when preserved by freezing or canning.

Sow seeds directly into warm, well-drained soil at a depth of 2–3 cm once the soil temperature exceeds 16°C. Germination typically occurs within 7–10 days. Pre-soaking the seed overnight can assist with more uniform germination, especially in cooler soils.

Plants should be spaced 8–10 cm apart in rows 40–50 cm apart. This variety prefers full sun and benefits from steady, even watering, particularly during flowering and pod development. Pods can be harvested from about 55–60 days after sowing, and frequent picking encourages extended production.
