Solanum tuberosum

The Vanilla potato is a premium early maincrop variety bred in Ireland by TEAGASC and introduced in 2018. Selected for its superb flavour and smooth appearance, it’s quickly gaining recognition in fresh markets for its combination of uniformity, high yield and culinary performance. Though not yet widely available in South Africa, it is a standout choice for those seeking a classic yellow-fleshed potato with modern growing traits.

Vanilla produces oval to long-oval tubers with a smooth, bright yellow skin and shallow eyes. Its pale yellow flesh cooks evenly and has a fine texture, making it perfect for boiling, roasting and pan-frying. The flavour is creamy and subtle, earning its name for delivering a mild, buttery taste that pairs beautifully with simple seasoning or fresh herbs.

Tubers should be planted into warm, well-prepared soil at a depth of 10 to 15 cm. Space them 30 cm apart in rows 75 cm wide. This variety sets tubers early and reaches full maturity around 90 to 100 days after planting. It offers a good tuber count from a low seed rate, making it an efficient choice for smaller gardens or high-efficiency plots.

Vanilla is known for its clean, uniform harvest and strong skin set, which supports excellent handling and storage life. The variety holds its shape well in cooking and is resistant to bruising during harvest. With a consistently attractive finish and top eating quality, Vanilla is as reliable as it is refined.
