Solanum lycopersicum
Available for purchase from 1 July 2025
White Tomesol is a rare heirloom tomato introduced by Dorothy Beiswenger in Minnesota in 1998, and has since gained a quiet cult following for its luminous ivory skin and extraordinary flavour. This variety stands apart with its smooth, pale parchment-toned fruits that often show a faint pink blush near the blossom end. With its mellow tones and gourmet appeal, White Tomesol offers both visual novelty and rich, nuanced flavour.
The fruit is medium to large, ranging from 225 to 350 grams, with some reaching nearly half a kilogram under ideal conditions. The flesh is creamy and dense, low in acid, and imbued with subtle sweetness and delicate tropical notes. Growers often describe hints of citrus, guava, or melon in its flavour, making it an ideal choice for fresh slicing, light salads, or artisan tomato dishes that highlight gentle, complex profiles.
Begin seeds indoors six to eight weeks before your last frost date. Sow seeds 5 millimetres deep in a moist, well-drained seedling mix, keeping the soil temperature between 21 and 28 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs within 7 to 14 days. Provide bright light immediately after sprouting to promote strong, healthy seedlings.
Once all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures remain above 15 degrees Celsius, transplant outdoors into well-prepared, compost-rich soil in full sun. Space plants at least 60 centimetres apart. White Tomesol grows as a vigorous indeterminate vine and will require staking or caging for support. Fruit begins to ripen around 80 days after transplant and continues steadily through the warm months.
White Tomesol is perfect for gardeners seeking something truly unique. Its creamy colour, tropical sweetness, and generous yield make it a standout both in the garden and on the plate. This variety offers beauty, flavour, and stability, with seed-saving potential for seasons to come.
