Artemisia absinthium
Wormwood is an aromatic perennial herb known for its silvery grey leaves, ornamental appeal and historic use in herbal medicines and flavourings. Originally from Europe and Asia, it thrives in South Africa’s sunny gardens, forming woody bushes between 60 and 150 cm tall. Its finely divided foliage and delicate yellow flower clusters add interest to borders and herb gardens, while its strong fragrance deters pests naturally.
Famously associated with absinthe, wormwood leaves have a distinctly bitter taste used to flavour liqueurs, bitters and medicinal tonics. Traditionally, wormwood was used to ease digestion, stimulate appetite, and deter intestinal parasites. Today, it is often grown as an insect repellent and used dried in sachets to protect clothing from moths. Due to its active compound thujone, wormwood should always be used cautiously, avoided by pregnant women, and consumed only in small amounts.
Seeds should be surface sown in early spring or started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Press seeds lightly into moist, well drained soil, without covering them, as they require light to germinate. Germination usually occurs within 7 to 21 days at temperatures around 18 to 24 °C. Transplant seedlings outdoors after frost has passed, spacing plants 45 to 60 cm apart to allow room for mature growth.
Wormwood thrives in full sun and well drained, sandy soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires little care beyond occasional pruning to control its vigorous spread. Plants are harvest ready at around 90 days, and regular harvesting of tips and flowers encourages fuller growth. Grow in pots or raised beds if spread becomes a concern.
