Cucurbita pepo

This variety is from a breeding line of Dr. Henry Munger of Cornell University and was introduced in 1957. It is a prolific producer of dark green fruits that are round and slightly ridged. They grow to around 900g. The flesh is a light yellow in colour and has a sweet and delicious flavour. The plants are resistant to mildew.

Ready to harvest in 90 days.

I was surprised at how versatile this squash variety is. Obviously it makes a delicious winter squash with rich, sweet fine textured flesh. However, the immature fruits are a sheer delight - steamed as a summer squash/zuccini substitute. They are sweet, rich and firmer(less water content) than most marrows.

I can't say they are my favourite winter squash due to the shape of the fruit to peel and chop, however they are one of my firm favourite summer squashes. Highly recommend!

I battled to get these to germinate for some reason and only had one plant make it to harvest. Well one was enough! It made a huge sprawling vine that produced lots of fruit. Not the most exciting squash to eat, the flesh is like a silky pumpkin texture. The sort of thing thats nice to add to soups and stews because it melts into the background. Going to try growing it on a trellis next time as I think it would climb well.
