Phaseolus vulgaris

The Kentucky Wonder Pole Bean is one of the most enduring and popular heirloom green beans, first recorded in 1864 under the name Texas Pole and later renamed Kentucky Wonder in 1877. This vigorous, climbing variety has been a favourite in American gardens for well over a century and is widely grown in the southern hemisphere for its heavy yields and exceptional flavour.

These beans are best enjoyed fresh as green snap beans. The long, round, stringless pods are tender and juicy when picked young, and their rich, beany flavour holds up well to both quick stir-frying and longer simmering. They also dry well for use as shelling beans, making them a versatile kitchen staple.

To ensure optimal germination, sow seeds directly into well-drained soil at a depth of 2–3 cm once the soil has warmed to at least 18°C. For best results, soak seeds overnight in warm water to speed up germination. Kentucky Wonder requires no light to germinate but does benefit from consistent warmth and moisture during the first 7–14 days.

Provide a sturdy trellis or support as vines can reach up to 2.5–3 m tall. Plants are best spaced 20–25 cm apart in rows 50–75 cm apart. Flowering and pod set begins within 60–75 days of sowing. Harvest the beans when they are 15–20 cm long and still tender; regular picking encourages continued production. Beans left to mature fully on the vine can be dried and stored for winter use.
