Beauregard sweet potato is one of the most popular and reliable sweet potato varieties in South Africa, known for its high yields, fast maturity, and excellent eating quality. Developed in Louisiana, USA, this variety has proven itself around the world and is especially well-suited to South African growing conditions.

Beauregard sweet potatoes are prized for their smooth, reddish skin and deep orange, moist flesh. They're a top choice for home cooks and market growers alike, offering a creamy texture and a sweet, rich flavour. Perfect for baking, roasting, mashing, or slicing into chips, they also store well, making them a versatile pantry staple.

Plant runners 5–10 cm deep in well-prepared soil once the danger of frost has passed. Ideal soil temperatures for rooting are between 20–30°C. While soaking is not necessary for runners, it's a good idea to water them well after transplanting to help them establish quickly.

Sweet potatoes thrive in warm, loose, well-drained soil with full sun. Space runners 25–30 cm apart in rows 90–100 cm apart. Regular watering is important in the early stages, but reduce it once the plants are established to encourage tuber formation. Expect to harvest around 90–120 days after planting.

Beauregard shows good tolerance to many common sweet potato diseases, including root knot nematodes and some soil-borne pathogens, though crop rotation and healthy soil practices are always recommended.
