Phaseolus vulgaris
Blue Lake Bush is a refined heirloom variety developed in 1961 as a bush form of the original Blue Lake pole bean, which dates back to the late 1800s. Bred for uniformity and flavour, this compact, determinate plant grows to about 40 to 45 cm tall and produces abundant crops of crisp, sweet green beans. It quickly became a favourite among home gardeners and market growers for its excellent performance and classic taste.
The pods are smooth, round and stringless, measuring around 13 to 15 cm long. They are ideal for fresh eating, steaming, stir-fries and especially for preserving through freezing or canning. Their firm texture holds up well after processing, making them a reliable staple for year-round use.
Sow seeds directly into warm, well-drained soil at a depth of 2 to 3 cm. Space seeds 10 to 15 cm apart in rows spaced at least 40 cm apart. Germination typically takes 7 to 14 days when soil temperatures range from 18 to 24°C. Do not pre-soak seeds, as excess moisture can hinder germination in cool soil.
Blue Lake Bush requires full sun and benefits from regular watering during flowering and pod development. Expect harvests to begin around 55 to 60 days from sowing. Pick frequently to encourage continuous production and maintain tenderness.
To improve growth and maximise yields, inoculate seeds with SoyGro Beanflo. This microbial treatment promotes nitrogen fixation and supports strong root development, especially in soils that have not hosted legumes recently.
Standard packet contains approx. 10 seeds

Using Beanflo-Rhizobium bacteria when planting your bean seed is the most cost effective way of putting nitrogen fixing bacteria into your soil, creating healthier soil for a more productive harvest.
