Beta vulgaris

Also known as Candy Stripe, Candy Cane, Bull’s Eye, Turnip Bassano. A beautifully-coloured, old heirloom beet from Italy, originally called Barbabietola di Bassano. It is a unique beetroot that has purple and white concentric rings. This beet contains the highest content of geosmin, an organic compound which gives beets their earthy taste and aroma. Also has a very high tolerance to bolting.

Chioggia beetroot was named after the northern coastal Italian town where it was first cultivated early in the early 1800s, the island fishing village of Chioggia, also called “Little Venice” because it is just outside of Venice. The surrounding region is known as the Veneto and is famed for its vegetable production. The original Bassano beet was a little flatter and duller-red than this one, but otherwise the same as the Chioggia we know today.

Grown exclusively as a table beet. With alternating white and purple coloured rings, the young beets make a beautiful slicing beet for salads. You can also use the baby greens from thinning for your salads. Excellent if slightly steamed, but roasting the Chioggia brings out the most flavour. When cooked whole they keep their colours well, but not if sliced beforehand.  Chioggia beet does not bleed like other beets.

About 50-60 days to maturity.

Standard packet contains approx. 200 seeds

They grew very well and looked amazing on the plate. A beautiful beet to include in your garden.

Excellent germination and well growing plants. The leaves are beautiful and can be eaten like spinach. The beets are earthy and sweet. Highly recommended as the also don't colour everything pink!

Really easy to germinate and grow to a successful harvest, even though I didn't really know what I was doing! The beetroot kept well in the ground and I harvested throughout late winter and into summer until December! Will definitely grow this variety again - it's beautiful and fuss-free. Growing in Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, for reference.

I found their germination was slightly worse than the Detroit Dark Red but those that did germinate went on to grow strongly. Aside from the stunning stripes (which are maintained even after roasting), I like this beet because one can use the young leaves in salads and the older ones in the same way as Swiss Chard. Neither the leaves nor the beet itself stain everything pink either!

Excellent germination! They grew so much healthier and faster than their competitors of other brands (seed I already had before trying these. But let me tell you.. never again will I bother with any other suppliers. The proof is in the veggies!

Back to the Chioggia: It's leaves don't have the typical red veins, but it grows well and is forgiving even in the KZN drought.

A MUST try!
