Chires Baby sweet corn is a rare, miniature open-pollinated variety from China that’s both productive and playful. Each compact plant can produce up to 20 tiny ears, making it a standout in the garden and kitchen. Although the plants stay small, their yields are impressive, and their harvest window opens faster than most traditional corns, giving you a quick return for your effort.

Best harvested five days after the silks appear, Chires Baby cobs are at their most tender and flavourful when picked young. They’re perfect for slicing into stir-fries, adding to curries, or serving fresh in salads. If left to fully mature, the ears dry down into small red kernels ideal for popping into rich-flavoured popcorn.

Direct sow after the last frost when soil temperatures reach at least 12°C. Plant 2–3 cm deep and space 20 cm apart in rows 50 cm apart. Always plant in blocks of at least four rows to ensure proper pollination. Expect the first harvest around 80 days from sowing, with early cobs ready just five days after silks emerge.

Livingseeds recommends growing a minimum of 40 plants for general use. If you plan to save seed, a population of 80–100 plants is necessary to maintain healthy genetic diversity and prevent suppression.
