Ocimum basilicum ‘Corsican’

Corsican Basil is a compact heirloom variety originating from the Mediterranean island of Corsica, where its striking foliage and robust flavour have earned it a place in both kitchen gardens and ornamental beds. With its marbled green leaves streaked in rich purple and upright growth habit, this basil stands out as much for its looks as its taste. Slow to bolt and easy to manage, it’s a favourite among gardeners seeking dependable summer harvests.

The flavour is fresh and mildly peppery with a soft, aromatic sweetness that works beautifully in pesto, sauces, or as a raw garnish in tomato salads. The distinctive colour makes it an attractive choice for finishing dishes or infusing oils and vinegars. It also offers some resistance to pests and makes an excellent companion plant for tomatoes and peppers.

Sow seeds in spring or early summer in trays, pressing them gently onto the surface of moist, well-drained seedling mix. Avoid covering, as basil needs light to germinate. Maintain temperatures of 18 to 21°C and keep soil consistently moist. Germination occurs in 5 to 10 days. Transplant seedlings once the first true leaves appear.

Corsican Basil grows to about 45 to 55 cm tall and thrives in full sun with fertile, compost-rich soil. Space plants 25 to 30 cm apart and water regularly. Trim regularly to prevent flowering and encourage new growth. Harvest begins around 60 to 70 days from sowing, with the best leaf flavour just before flowering.
