• IPC Yellow (aka Dagga)

Ipomoea batatas

IPC Yellow, also known locally as Dagga sweet potato, is a traditional yellow-fleshed variety valued for its drought tolerance and consistent yields. Although not as flashy as modern commercial types, IPC Yellow remains a favourite in many rural and home gardens for its reliability and taste.

This variety produces medium to large roots with golden-yellow flesh and a light brown to tan skin. Its flavour is earthy and mildly sweet, making it ideal for boiling or steaming. The texture remains firm when cooked, making IPC Yellow an excellent choice for traditional meals, mashes, and stews.

Plant slips 5–10 cm deep in warm, well-drained soil after the last frost. Soil temperatures should be 20–30°C for best rooting. Soaking is unnecessary, but runners benefit from being watered thoroughly after planting.

IPC Yellow performs well in most soil types but prefers fertile, loose soil and full sun. Space runners 25–30 cm apart in rows 90–100 cm apart. Harvesting typically takes place between 100–120 days after planting. Reduce watering as the roots near maturity to avoid splitting.

This variety is regarded as hardy and tolerant to variable conditions. While formal resistance data is limited, IPC Yellow is known for its resilience in low-input systems and has shown good field tolerance to local pests and diseases.
