Evil Olive is a striking heirloom tomato from the United States, treasured for its extraordinary colouring and high-yielding nature. This variety grows long trusses of small cherry-plum shaped fruit that ripen from deep olive green to a marbled blend of orange and red while often retaining a green base. Its unusual appearance, along with its crisp texture, has earned it a devoted following among growers seeking something both productive and visually bold.

The flavour of Evil Olive is refreshing and distinct. It offers a sweet, tangy taste with a slight citrus finish and a crunchy bite that sets it apart from typical cherry tomatoes. The firm flesh makes it an excellent choice for fresh salsa, especially salsa verde, as well as for salads, garnishes, and canning. Its dense texture holds up well after harvesting, making it a favourite for longer storage and short-term preserving.

To start, sow seeds indoors six to eight weeks before your final frost date. Plant seeds 3 mm deep in a well-drained germination mix and maintain a consistent temperature of 21 to 28°C. Germination can be slower than average, often taking up to 14 days or longer. Ensure strong light once germination begins to prevent leggy growth.

Transplant seedlings after all risk of frost has passed, spacing them at least 60 cm apart in rich, composted soil with full sun exposure. Evil Olive grows as a vigorous indeterminate vine reaching up to two metres, requiring sturdy staking or trellising. Fruit sets begin in mid-season and continue until frost, with harvests ready around 75 days after transplanting. Ripe fruits can be identified by a blush of red or orange on the olive skin and a slight softness to the touch.

Noted for its keeping ability, Evil Olive remains firm and flavourful well after picking. It is a reliable, visually compelling tomato, ideal for gardeners who value both yield and standout aesthetics in their summer salads.
