Phaseolus vulgaris

A really old Tasmanian variety, saved by one family for over 65 years. This is a unique and very rare bean variety, once again enabled by seed saving friends of Livingseeds. A runner with flat-ish beans and the unusual distinction of having a salty taste. This is a string bean, so expect the better flavour that comes with the effort. Also known as “Natural Salt”.

Standard packet contains approx. 25 seeds

Petite packet contains approx. 10 seeds

Using Beanflo-Rhizobium bacteria when planting your bean seed is the most cost effective way of putting nitrogen fixing bacteria into your soil, creating healthier soil for a more productive harvest.

These beans were the star of my overgrown summer garden 2023/2024 in Southern Gauteng. They produced abundantly with no special care and seemed to make it through without any pest or disease pressure. They also make a fantastic dry or Shelly bean. The harvest was so great from a single packet of seed that we had no need to plant the following season. Will be replanting this year though!

Good growers - wanted them to cover a garden arch and they sprung up in no time at all. Then had lots of beautiful lilac blossoms which brought the bees and butterflies in hordes. Well worth adding into the garden!

My first experience with these beans has me bowled over! Lohrey's Old Tas have been fantastic performers, producing a heavy crop of large, long pods (~25cm) with very little trouble. The only pest that seemed to bother them were the dratted mousebirds that sat on the support structure and nibbled at the leaves. Young beans were excellent eating as green beans - tender, stringless and a lovely flavour - but I couldn't keep up with them, so let them go to full-size, since drying beans are my priority anyway.

They definitely need as tall a structure as you can manage - 2m tall is not enough - but they'll reward that effort with fantastic productivity in a small space. Planted fairly densely they shaded out any and all weed competition beneath. I'm looking forward to much larger plantings next year.
