Cucurbita pepo

LIMITED STOCK

Another very exciting release for us. These butternuts can grow to almost a meter in length! They store well, in fact they get sweeter the longer they are stored. The long neck ensure that you have plenty of harvestable flesh and only a small seed cavity right at the base.

Ready for harvest in 95 days.

Standard packet contains approx. 5 seeds

There is no Petite packet available

I've found the Tahitian Butternut slow to start producing, however when they start they produce abundantly! It gets to a point when fruit has set and we start to eat the immature butternuts as summer squash.

The flavour is somewhat different from that of a Waltham butternut, with a slight melon flavour. Stores exceptionally well and increases slightly in sweet flavour as it loses moisture.

I grow this variety every year and only have to hand pollinate/save seed every 3rd or 4th year. A firm favourite with my family as each fruit is >1kg (I've never harvested smaller than 1kg fruit of this variety). Butternut soup, roast vegetables and butternut fritters become regular occurrences when you grow the Tahitian Butternut.

Grew this in Spring and pulled them at the end of Summer. Somehow we missed a piece and it rooted now we have this yummy butternut growing in winter! The plant grows vigorously even without attention! The plant did not get powdery mildew in our hot, humid weather like our other butternut. They are huge and store really well and taste so sweet.

Success at last ,Kept 1 on my surviving the wind plant, this grew to 90cm long ,and 12kilos.
{WOW} Needed long time to get to this to ripe stage ,so had to protect from 1st cold spells.
Best baked with olive oil and spice, or just steamed and mashed with butter. Will keep seeds and try to better the size next year, friends thought we gave it hormones, but we grow only organically.

UPDATE . Grew again this year ,kept 1 specimen on plant ,took whole season to mature to 12 kilos 90 cm long [WOW] protected from cold weather until picking at mid May ,cured for a couple weeks and started eating begin June. Cut off a oiece at a time and wipe end with bleach to stop any mould and it seals itself.Am keeping on the counter in my cold kitchen .Kept seeds and am definitely growing again.Best baked or glazed in pan with oil ar butter and sugar to glaze ,,FABULOUS.

This is my 2nd season of growing this butternut ,no luck so far with fruiting .2017 season very cold until January so no female flowers ,2018 was extremely hot from early October so no female flowers and pollen inactive , only cooled now in end February ,managed to get 3 viable fruit off 2 plants ,but II don't think we have enough time for them to ripen properly . I am not giving up on this variety as I really want these . so will try again next year Good strong plants though
