Phaseolus vulgaris
Top Crop Bush Bean is a reliable, early maturing heirloom variety introduced in 1950 and bred for uniformity and high yields. Recognised with an All-America Selections award in its release year, Top Crop has maintained popularity thanks to its upright growth habit and adaptability. Compact plants grow to about 45 cm tall, holding pods well above the soil for clean harvesting.
The pods are round, straight, stringless, and measure around 12–15 cm in length. Known for their tender texture and excellent flavour, they are ideal for fresh eating and preserving. Top Crop beans hold up well to canning and freezing, making them a practical choice for preserving summer harvests.
Sow seeds directly into warm, well-drained soil at a depth of 2–3 cm once the soil has warmed above 16°C. Germination typically occurs within 7–10 days. For early spring planting, pre-soaking the seeds overnight may improve germination uniformity.
Space plants 8–10 cm apart in rows 40–50 cm apart. Provide full sun and maintain consistent moisture, especially during flowering and early pod set. Harvest typically begins around 50–55 days from sowing. Frequent picking of young pods encourages prolonged production.
